Project Description

BML owns and manages Queensland’s largest centre for the marketing and distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Established in 1964, the markets required upgrades to their fire systems, to comply with modern fire regulations.

Project scope

Wiley were engaged for the initial works of a staged upgrade of the entire 770,000m² site (involving four stages in total).
Stage one upgrades included:

  • Brand new integrated fire ring main system, with dedicated water supply from the street and capacity to service future upgrade stages
  • Laying of over 2km of in-ground fire hydrant reticulation. Pipes crossed several hundred existing services, which were poorly documented, due to their establishment in 1964
  • Construction of a new fire pump house

Business value to client

The Brisbane Markets are densely populated with wholesale food traders during working hours and on weekends, the markets transform into a community entertainment hub showcasing quality local foods.

With such a high volume of people, moving vehicles and expensive product, this proactive investment in fire system upgrades significantly reduces the risk of injury to workers and visitors and loss of assets in the event of a fire.
Wiley successfully delivered a critical infrastructure project for the markets, ensuring fruit and vegetable traders maintained their business operations. Throughout the upgrades, the markets remained 100% operational, thanks to Wiley’s effective planning and execution.
