Project Description

Project scope

Wiley collaborated closely with Asterion during the project’s early planning phase, addressing a challenging scope that included:

  • Investigating site requirements and identifying suitable locations
  • Partnering with Pharmout and Wagner Corporation to develop facility masterplans and assist with submissions for federal licensing and major project status
  • Collaborating with Asterion’s Dutch glasshouse supplier Van der Hoeven on facility design
  • Creating staging plans for project phases and selecting equipment for lighting, facility control, and airflow
  • Applying expertise in hygiene and pathogen control, essential for processing requirements
  • Planning nursery operations, including plant movements, growing rooms, table movements, schwazzing (defoliation), harvesting, processing, waste management and disposal
  • Assessing water and energy needs for the operation
  • Documenting processes leading to Development Approval (DA) from Toowoomba Regional Council
  • Developing the overall project budget

Business value to client

Asterion’s collaboration with Wiley during the development of a 75-hectare facility will enable the production of over 500,000 kg of medicinal cannabis annually. This project is poised to create up to 1,000 jobs in the region, drawing on a workforce skilled in agriculture and horticulture.

By leveraging this initiative, Australia can maximise its potential in the medicinal cannabis sector, enhancing both domestic accessibility and export opportunities. The large-scale production will significantly improve the availability of medicinal cannabis for Australians, meeting growing demand and fostering industry growth.
