The Brisbane Markets and Wiley’s own Darrin Mitchell, Site Manager of the ongoing works at the Markets, (pictured in the yellow vest to the left of Mr. Abbott) received a surprise visitor along with a truck load of fruit and vegetables this morning.
As part of the upcoming anniversary of the 2011 Floods, Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, hitched a ride into the Rocklea Markets with a delivery truck bringing fresh produce from Grantham, one of the hardest hit areas during the floods twelve months ago.
In his doorstop interview conducted during his visit Mr Abbott recalled, “About a year ago, this spot where we are standing was under about a metre of water. The water did enormous damage to these markets as it did to so many homes and businesses throughout Brisbane and of course there were floods and cyclones that did enormous damage in other parts of Queensland, too.”
He went on to say, “We have a normal life because the people who work in these markets work very long hours, very unsocial hours, so that we can have the normal life that we take for granted. I think it’s very important that Australians remember, at about the anniversary of the floods, just how tough the people of Brisbane, the Lockyer Valley, Toowoomba and other parts of Queensland have had it over the last twelve months.”
Wiley takes pride in their role in the recovery and upgrade of the Brisbane Markets site and appreciates the continued hard work and success achieved by Darrin and his team.
